About

This summary of my life comes from my Positively Kai website.  You can always explore there for more. The most important story in “It’s Your Wave – Ride It” is YOUR story. Check out The Wave section then CONTACT us if you want to share.

Kai Lenny: Kai learned how to surf at the age of 4, windsurf at 6, stand up surf at 7 and kite surf at 9. Learning how to do these sports all happened naturally, and from it grew his love affair with the ocean and the waves.

As Kai was growing up, he witnessed legendary watermen not only doing amazing feats on the water, but also inventing new sports. Kai’s willingness to keep an open mind and try the newly developed sports allowed for a very strong foundation in his surfing.

Kai has been lucky enough to grow up around surfing legends like Robby Naish, Dave Kalama, Buzzy Kerbox and Laird Hamilton. Over the years he has absorbed their teachings and knowledge not only in the water but off the water as well. Having such supportive mentors and family helped Kai realize his dream of becoming a professional athlete.

Kai loves competition; currently his main competitive sport is SUP and even at his early age, he already holds the title of 3 World Championships. His thirst for competition has him traveling the globe seeing and learning from the different cultures.

The teachings of his mentors include doing things to teach the youth and Kai loves to work with kids. He often participates with Na Ka Ma Kai, an organization that conducts water clinics for children on Oahu and the neighbor islands. Kai has also created an organization called Positively Kai. The objective is to set up training clinics to introduce kids to water sports that suit their locations.

In or out of the water, Kai brings his positive, can-do attitude to everything that he does. He is extremely grateful to have experienced so much at such an early age. His enthusiasm is highly contagious and he looks forward to sharing his fun-loving spirit and passion for the water with everyone he meets.
